The History of Lake Lure
Lake Lure real estate was a vision of Dr. Lucius Morse. He came to the area when he was sick in the early 1900's. Dr. Morse wanted a lake to be the centerpiece of the resort, which Dr. Morse's wife, Elizabeth, named. In 1902, after Dr. Morse got the financial backing he needed from his brothers, he bought the 400 acres of Chimney Rock from Jerome Freeman for $5,000.00. He used his company (Chimney Rock Mountains, Inc.) to purchase the land, which eventually bought a total 8,000 acres of land. In 1925, the Carolina Mountain Power Company was formed and they began the construction of the dam with the help of a Hydraulic Engineering firm from Charlotte, North Carolina.
The development of the resort was funded by a $1-million dollar first mortgage. The dam was finished in 1926 and the creation of the lake was underway. The lake was complete by 1927 with 27 miles of beautiful shoreline and Lake Lure was officially incorporated. The development of the resort itself came to a stop in 1929, when the economy began to fail. Both Stroud & Company and Standard Mortgage Company foreclosed on the loan for the land taken out by Chimney Rock Mountains, Inc. All the property was then sold and purchased by the town of Lake Lure. The lake itself was purchased in 1965 from the Carolina Mountain Corporations Powers. Now, Lake Lure real estate is held in trust by the Town of Lake Lure. This is for the benefit of Lake Lure citizens.
Education in Lake Lure
Although Lake Lure has been home to many schools, from one room school houses to the best high schools in the county, it is no longer home to any schools. Students living in Lake Lure real estate attend schools in the Polk County Schools System and Rutherford County Schools System. Another great place to visit is the Cedar Creek Stables, a public riding facility that offers horseback riding trips through the scenic mountains of North Carolina. Golf is always a favorite with local golf lovers. There are some really great golf courses nearby.
