History of Flat Rock
Flat Rock is rich with a history of diverse times and lives. The area's streams and fields were once used as hunting grounds by the Cherokee Indians. Early settlers came to the area trying to escape the spreading malaria and extreme summer heat of South Carolina by accepting land grants after the Revolution. After merchants began trading with Cherokee Indians, the area became know as "Great Flat Rock", named after the huge flat rock of their meeting place. In 1807, a settlement was growing around it.
By the time the Buncombe Turnpike was complete in 1827 (connecting Asheville to Poinsett Highway), Flat Rock real estate was thriving. The town had a church, two taverns, grist and lumber mills in operation. The town was forever changed in 1829, when Charles Baring and his British wife moved to Flat Rock and bought 400 acres to build a summer home known as Mountain Lodge. Baring continued to buy land until he owned well over 3000 acres, which he sold to others seeking summer homes in Flat Rock real estate. Hundreds of people came to build extravagant summer homes in Flat Rock. The community continued to thrive and tourists came to the area from as far as Florida. The railroad came in 1879, providing a welcome alternative for travelers. The Flat Rock Depot was built in what is now known as East Flat Rock in 1889. The town has continued to remain a stable economy throughout the years and was incorporated in 1995 as The Village of Flat Rock.
Education in Flat Rock
The Henderson County School System provides public education for Flat Rock students in grades kindergarten through twelve. The school system is comprised of four high schools, four middle schools and 12 elementary schools. Also, the Balfour Education Center provides a non-traditional approach to schooling.
Things to Do in Flat Rock
The Flat Rock Playhouse is a great place to visit. It's a professional theater where you can catch great comedies, musicals and dramas. All shows are appropriate for the entire family and the theater is rated as one of the top ten theaters in the nation.
The Carl Sandburg National Historic Site is another great place to visit. The site is managed by the National Park Service, who has preserved the Sandburg legacy. This historic site features an 1838 antebellum house and a 1900s dairy barn. The park also has a small goat herd in honor of Mrs. Sandburg's championships of breeding dairy goats. The mountainside woods, rolling pastures, historic gardens and trails are also preserved to reflect the landscape that the Sandburg family once enjoyed.
There is plenty to do outdoors, with parks and open space for everyone. There are several restaurants to enjoy; from eat-in to take-out. And, there are some great shopping spots where you will find antiques, new, fun and funky items.
